Lumen IoD
Savings Calculator

Lumen Internet on Demand bills hourly by bandwidth tier. If your circuits run at peak speed 24/7 but your team only works business hours, you're paying for capacity nobody is using. This free calculator estimates how much you can save by scheduling bandwidth down off-hours — based on publicly visible 2026 Lumen NaaS rates.

Estimate Your Lumen IoD Savings

Pick your current peak bandwidth tier, the tier you'd scale down to off-hours, and the hours per week you actually need peak. The calculator does the rest.

How the Calculation Works

Lumen IoD uses consumption-based billing. You're charged an hourly rate that depends on the bandwidth tier currently active on the circuit. A 1 Gbps circuit running 24/7 for a full month uses about 730 hours of peak time. At a public reference rate of $1.06/hr, that is roughly $773.80/mo in bandwidth charges alone, before any port access fees.

If your office is genuinely active 50 hours a week (about 217 hours per month), then for the other ~513 hours of the month the circuit is sitting idle at full speed. The savings opportunity is the gap between the cost of running peak 24/7 and the cost of running peak only during business hours, with the rest of the month falling back to a 1 Mbps backup tier at $0.10/hr.

The math:

  • Static cost = peak hourly rate × 730 hours
  • Scheduled cost = (peak hourly rate × peak hours) + (off-peak hourly rate × off-peak hours)
  • Monthly savings = static cost − scheduled cost

The calculator runs that math against the bandwidth tiers and peak hours you select, then multiplies the per-circuit savings by your circuit count. Port access fees, Defender add-ons, taxes, and any one-time elevation events are deliberately excluded because they don't change between the two scenarios.

Why Scheduling Wins for Most Circuits

The reason scheduling saves so much money is structural: a standard work week (40–60 hours) is only 3036% of total hours in a week. The other 70–75% of the time — nights, weekends, holidays — your circuit is still billing at peak speed if you don't schedule it down.

The 1 Mbps backup tier at $0.10/hr lets you maintain a live connection for monitoring, keep-alives, and any small overnight traffic without paying peak rates. That tier is specifically why this savings pattern works on Lumen IoD and not on traditional fixed-rate circuits.

Scheduling is not a fit for every circuit. If your workload genuinely runs 24/7 — production SaaS infrastructure, always-on replication, real-time monitoring under continuous load — peak bandwidth is the right answer and the calculator will correctly show zero savings. Scheduling is for circuits with predictable idle windows.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this Lumen IoD savings calculator work?+

It compares your current 24/7 bandwidth cost against a scheduled profile. You pick a peak bandwidth tier (e.g. 1 Gbps), an off-peak fallback tier (e.g. 1 Mbps Backup), and how many hours per week your team actually needs peak bandwidth. The calculator multiplies each tier rate by its hours per month (about 730 hours total) and shows monthly and annual savings versus running peak 24/7.

Where do the Lumen IoD hourly rates come from?+

Reference rates are based on publicly visible Lumen IoD pricing as of 2026 — most commonly cited as $0.10/hr for the 1 Mbps backup tier, $0.47/hr for 100 Mbps, $1.06/hr for 1 Gbps, $3.93/hr for 10 Gbps, and $19.25/hr for 100 Gbps. Your actual rates may differ based on port type, term commitment, and any negotiated discounts in your Lumen NaaS contract. Always validate against your own Lumen quote or invoice before making purchase decisions.

Is a 30–50% savings realistic on Lumen IoD?+

For circuits that only need peak bandwidth during business hours (40–60 hours per week) and can scale down to the 1 Mbps backup tier overnight and on weekends, savings of 30–50% are typical because off-peak hours make up roughly 75% of the month. Circuits that need peak bandwidth 24/7 (e.g. always-on production workloads) will not see savings — for those, scheduling is not the right answer.

Does this calculator account for the Lumen port access fee?+

No. The calculator shows the bandwidth (usage) cost only. Your monthly Lumen invoice will also include a fixed port access fee — typically $250/mo for a 1 Gbps port, $450/mo for a 10 Gbps port, and $800/mo for a 100 Gbps port at 3-year term pricing. The port fee is the same whether you run peak 24/7 or schedule down, so it does not affect the savings comparison itself.

How does this calculator differ from Apptifi or Flux pricing tools?+

This is a free public estimator with no signup. It does not connect to your live Lumen account or schedule any real bandwidth changes — it only models the savings opportunity. Apptifi and Flux are operational tools that use the Lumen NaaS API to actually execute the scheduled bandwidth changes against your real circuits.

How much does Apptifi cost?+

Apptifi Core is $50/month or $400/year per user. The Core + Microsoft 365 Calendar Sync plan is $300/month or $2,600/year for 5 users. Both plans include the visual scheduler, real-time IoD cost calculator, NaaS API automation, Circuit Groups, multi-customer/MSP support, Defender Plus management, and Ethernet on Demand scheduling.
